Why students and teachers are concerned

Psychological Impact on Students

Biology classes should teach students to have an appreciation and respect for all life. Unfortunately, dissection imparts the opposite lesson—that animals are expendable and undeserving of our concern.

Sociological studies have shown that dissection can foster attitudes of indifference toward animals.

Some educators are also concerned that dissection exercises might encourage cruelty toward animals outside the classroom. Many studies have linked aggressiveness toward animals and aggressiveness toward humans.

Some students find dissection to be disturbing – so much so that they are discouraged from pursuing careers in science or medicine.
